Roadside Fuel Reduction
Solano RCD received a CAL FIRE Wildfire Prevention Grant in 2026 (WPG-5GG25119) to conduct roadside fuel reduction in rural areas of Solano County. Work will be conducted in both the public right-of-way and private properties with landowner agreement, with the goal of managing roadside vegetation (up to 30' from roadside) to reduce wildfire risk.
Project activities may include limbing, chipping, brush and tree removal, mowing, and initial herbicide application (cut-stump treatments to prevent resprouting, and stem injection for Tree of Heaven). Followup herbicide application will happen in subsequent years.
Implementation will occur in phases:
- Phase 1: Cantelow Road & Gibson Canyon Road (funded in 2026)
- Phase 2: Pleasants Valley Road & Steiger Hill Road (will be treated if funding allows)

FireSmart Grazing
The Solano RCD is partnering with local landowners to reduce wildfire fuels in high fire risk areas through targeted livestock grazing. Contract grazing is planned and implemented as grant funding allows.
Grazing Cooperatives are partnerships where two or more landowners co-own a herd of grazing animals and manage multiple properties with a single herd. This collaborative model makes grazing more accessible for smaller landowners and helps reduce individual financial burdens. The RCD has grant funding to assist with establishing grazing cooperatives in Solano County.

Biochar Kiln Loan Program
Biochar kilns are specialized tools used to produce biochar—a fine-grained charcoal made from biomass. This biomass can come from fuel reduction activities, like pruning trees around a house, or can come from agricultural activities such as orchard or vineyard management. Biochar offers numerous benefits for soil health, including enhanced water retention, reduced erosion, and improved crop yields. Used for over two thousand years, biochar supports vital soil biodiversity and strengthens ecosystem resilience.
Landowners can create their own biochar by burning excess woody plant material in a specialized kiln.
The Solano RCD offers a biochar kiln loan program to make it easier for landowners to access this tool.

Post-Fire Tree Removal (2020 LNU)
Solano RCD was awarded under the U.S. Forest Service’s Post-Fire Disaster Recovery Grant to plan and implement post-fire disaster recovery treatment methods within the 2020 LNU Lightning Complex wildfire perimeter.
In SRCD surveys, priority trees were identified that pose a threat to private stewardship of forested riparian parcels. Priority trees as defined in SRCD’s survey process are those which are burned and dead or dying; if they fell, would present substantial risk of erosion or flooding; present a safety hazard or other barrier to landowners conducting habitat stewardship ; and are feasible to remove with equipment or hand falling methods. Planning and permitting is ongoing to conduct targeted removal.
Project Timeline:
- 9/2020 Immediate post-fire assistance & site visits
- 9/2022 Grant received
- 12/2022 Initial surveys begun for project scoping
- 4/2026 Additional funding received
- 5/2025 CEQA document (MND) filed
- 6/2025 CDFW permit application submitted
- 8/2026 CDFW permit received
- 9/2026 Tree removal work commencing
- 10/2026 Tree removal work concluding
Due to the high cost of tree removal and permitting burden, the RCD will only be able to treat a portion of the properties with the current grant funding. We appreciate the participation of all landowners in this effort and will reach out if additional funding becomes available for further tree removal.
Prescribed Burns
Solano RCD plans and completes prescribed burns as projects require, and as grant funding & partnerships allow. If you're interested in working with the RCD on a burn, please reach out to .
Nelson Road: This project was completed in the Summer of 2025. Funding was provided by CAL FIRE Wildfire Prevention Grants to the Yolo County RCD and for which Solano RCD was a subcontractor. The site and treatments were identified as high priorities by partners at Fairfield Fire Department, CAL FIRE, and Vacaville Fire Department. City of Vacaville Public Works granted access to the site for fuel reduction — limbing, piling, pile burning, and broadcast burning. The California Association of Resource Conservation Districts (CARCD) held one firefighter training courses (FFT2) to provide workforce development training to RCD staff and community partners. The area last burned in August 2020 during the LNU Lightning Complex Fires and fuel reduction efforts will be maintained with cattle grazing beginning November 2025.
