Education and Outreach Programs
Second and third graders use their binoculars to observe some birds flying. The Solano RCD’s environmental education program impacts thousands of Solano County residents in their classrooms, in regional parks and open spaces, and at their drinking water source. It generates awareness of local stewardship challenges and provides user appropriate information on how to best address those challenges. It works collaboratively with stakeholders, integrates various interests, and leverages support from many sectors to implement efficient and effective programming to the largest possible audience.
The award-winning Solano RCD environmental education programming engages Solano County residents through three primary programs:
The Solano RCD student education programs are multi-partner initiatives that merge local environmental education priorities with current state K-12 curriculum standards. In response to California’s persistent drought, education priorities focus on water conservation awareness and promoting stewardship practices to help families mitigate their impacts on water quality. Following the path water takes from source to sink, promoting used oil recycling, the ‘Triple R’ message, and citizen science opportunities are also common program themes.
Solano County Boater and Visitor Outreach
By coordinating a diverse regional partnership and the delivery of stewardship education to thousands of boaters and visitors at Lake Berryessa, Rio Vista, and the Suisun City Waterfront, the RCD effectively supports the water quality management goals for Solano County. A free oil absorbent exchange program enables boaters to properly dispose of contaminated oil absorbents for oil recycling and to install a clean absorbent in their boat’s bilge compartment.
Volunteer Cleanup Events
The RCD coordinates three annual cleanup events drawing thousands of Solano County residents to help keep Solano and its communities “green and clean”:
- Earth Day
- World Environment Day
- Coastal Cleanup Day

The Solano RCD also provides watershed stewardship workshops for landowners and rural residents, often in collaboration with local and regional partners.
