SOLANO COUNTY EARTH DAY CELEBRATION GOING DIGITAL TO MARK EVENT’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY

Solano County, CA (April 16, 2020): Local Earth Day Cleanup officials are excited to announce the region’s first ever digital Earth Week Celebration happening online from Sunday, April 19 to Saturday, April 25. The week-long virtual event allows Solano County residents to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day even while sheltering in place. New activities, webinars, and resources will be shared by Cleanup Solano, Solano County’s official platform for promoting its annual countywide cleanup events. Those interested are encouraged to follow @cleanupsolano on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter or visit cleanupsolano.org.

Last month, Solano County cancelled the annual cleanup event to help limit the spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. However, because this year marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, organizers felt it was important to continue offering something meaningful for the public to do while following social distancing protocols.

“Although we won’t be removing hundreds of pounds of trash from our land and waterways, every one of us can still make a difference by learning more about our environment and the impacts of pollution, identify solutions, and contribute to scientific research,” shared Narcisa Untal, Senior Planner for the Solano County Department of Resource Management. . “That’s where the idea for a digital week-long celebration came from so we can still follow the County’s directive to shelter at home while commemorating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.”

Each day will have a new theme and content for participants to engage with. The week will start off with a community-based science campaign, “The City Nature Challenge,” peak with a 1:00PM webinar featuring the California Coastal Commission on Wednesday, April 22, and end with ideas on how anyone can support their community during this difficult time. Registration for the April 22 webinar opens April 15 at cleanupsolano.org.

Earth Day is officially held on April 22 each year, marking the date in which thousands of people gathered across the United States to communicate their concerns over the scientific link between pollution and public health. The first event was held in 1970.

The 2020 Digital Earth Week Celebration is led by the Solano Resource Conservation District that coordinates the annual countywide cleanup events on behalf of Solano County and its partners:  California Coastal Commission, Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District, Vallejo Watershed Alliance, Solano County Parks, Genentech Vacaville, Benicia Tree Foundation, Downtown Vacaville Business Improvement District, Mt. Diablo Resource Recovery, Recology, Republic Services, Solano Land Trust, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Solano County Sheriff’s Office, and all of Solano County’s cities as well as their volunteer site leaders.

Future Solano County cleanups include World Environment Day at Lake Solano on June 6 and California Coastal Cleanup Day on September 26. Please  visit Solano County’s official cleanup website, cleanupsolano.org, or follow @cleanupsolano on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for event updates.
